Your Pathways to Well-Being Tip: Home Healthcare — Considerations and Choices
How will you help me maintain my current daily routine?
How will you support my independence in daily activities?
How do you ensure a good match between me and the home caregiver?
The growing availability of in-home, in-person services can play an important role throughout the dementia journey. From primary medicine house calls to occupational therapists, from social workers to spiritual counselors—and more—home care can support ongoing participation and purposeful living.
When considering home healthcare:
- Look for a company that offers a wide range of services, including wellness-companionship, personal care, advanced personal care, and skilled nursing services, and the flexibility to adapt care as needed and over time.
- Ensure the provider employs care partners who are highly skilled, undergo continuous training with a focus on compassionate dementia care, and pass through background checks
- Conduct interviews. In this way, the person living with dementia and their care partner can gather important information and make an informed decision.
- Check your coverage. Medicare will cover some of this care. Medicare coverage, however, generally does not include long-term care by home health aides, which is usually paid for out-of- pocket or with long-term care insurance.
- Are you a veteran? The Veterans Administration has long offered a home healthcare option to many veterans. To learn more about these services, visit: gov/geriatrics.
