Your Pathways to Well-Being Tip: Relatives, Revelry…and Routines!
Most people living with dementia find that a regular routine is helpful. Even if you’ve been a spontaneous person in the past, you might feel better with a more fixed routine…
–Pathways to Well-Being, Section 4.4
The holiday season is upon us—and our lives may turn busy with people, gatherings, and even travel. A good daily routine—one that reflects your interests and goals and the times of the day when you have more energy—can play an important role in maintaining meaning, purpose, and independence. During this busy holiday season, be sure to share with family and friends your commitment to consistently honoring that daily routine.
Friends and family may be interested to learn that:
- Commitment to a routine can help you manage both time and stress.
- A daily schedule can help reduce the chances of missing an important task, especially at the busiest time of the year.
- Managing a daily schedule can be done through a computer or smartphone, or through creative ways that include written and picture cues in places where you know you will look.
- Family care partners may have assisted you in crafting a daily routine early in your dementia journey.
- Care professionals (occupational, physical, speech-language, mental health) can assist in adapting routines over time, and as needed, to make continued daily success possible.
