Your Pathways to Well-Being Tip: Sharing the Story of You
People with dementia are still people who contribute a great deal in their life and our lives…It doesn’t diminish anything that we contribute. —Dave Baldridge, Manual Guide
Throughout the life journey, there is so much for us to learn, and so much for us to teach others. Sharing the stories of our lives—the rich experiences, challenges, and joys that have made each of us unique—can be a rewarding opportunity to craft a very special gift for family and friends.
To get started, consider:
- Will you work alone to record your story, or with a family member or friend?
- Will you handwrite, type on a computer, or record (audio or video) your life story?
- Will you write as stories arise on their own or participate in a memoir writing workshop at a local college or public library?
- Will you use an online resource with storytelling prompts?
The process of sharing your life story should be enriching and meaningful. There is no need for deadlines or major production goals. You can tell some or all of your story–all you need to do is get started!
There are many things that we know how to do. We can grow and help others to grow, too, when we share what we know. —Rev. Dr. Cynthia Huling Hummel, Manual Guide
