Anosognosia is a lack of insight or self-awareness due to physical damage in the brain. It is a mismatch between self-awareness and actual functional abilities. It is NOT lying……It is NOT denial. It can ebb and flow. The prevalence rates are between 40-80% of people living with dementia.

Anosognosia can look like a variety of things

  • Lack of awareness about diagnosis
  • Lack of insight related to specific symptom or deficits
  • Lack of understanding about care needs
